X120Mn12 / 1.3401 — Austenitic manganese steel
At Egumendi, we have been working exclusively with manganese steels for over 50 years. X120Mn12 —also designated as 1.3401 or Hadfield steel— is the material upon which a large part of our activity is built: we know it in depth, we transform it daily and we know exactly how it behaves in service.
It is an austenitic manganese steel (≈12–14% Mn) designed for applications subjected to severe impact, pressure and dynamic wear. Below, we explain why it is a differentiating material, what distinguishes it from other wear-resistant steels and in which applications it offers particularly effective performance.
Why X120Mn12 is different: in-service hardening
The defining property of X120Mn12, which distinguishes it from many conventional quenched steels, is its work hardening capacity.
In its supplied state, the material has a moderate hardness, between 180 and 240 HB. This allows it to be cut, machined, curved and welded with relative ease. However, when it goes into service—when it receives sustained impact or pressure—its surface progressively hardens until it reaches values of 500–600 HB, while the inner core maintains its ductility and toughness.
In other words: the harder it works, the more resistant it becomes.
This combination—an increasingly hard surface and a non-brittle core—makes X120Mn12 particularly effective in conditions where other materials fail due to cracking, premature wear or sudden breakage.
Typical chemical composition
| Element | Content |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 1.0 – 1.3 % |
| Manganese (Mn) | 11.0 – 13.0 % |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.5 % |
This composition is what makes possible the combination of toughness, ductility and in-service work hardening capacity that characterises Hadfield steel.
Differentiating properties of X120Mn12 / 1.3401
Progressive surface hardening
Surface hardness continuously increases under impact or pressure, improving wear resistance as the part works.
High resistance to impact and cracking
Its behaviour under dynamic loads makes it a particularly suitable material for severe applications.
Ductile core under a hardened surface
Even after significant surface hardening, the core remains ductile, hindering the propagation of cracks.
Stable austenitic structure
The austenitic microstructure provides ductility, energy absorption and highly valuable behaviour in demanding technical applications.
Good formability prior to hardening
In its supplied state, X120Mn12 can be curved, bent, cut and welded with relative ease. At Egumendi, we manufacture parts in accordance with customer drawings from sheets, bars and flat plates in a wide range of thicknesses and geometries.
Applications for X120Mn12 / 1.3401 steel
X120Mn12 / 1.3401 is indicated for components that must simultaneously resist impact and abrasion, especially when the stress is variable or increases over time.
Railway sector
UIC 893-0 wear plates for bogies are one of the most demanding applications for Hadfield steel. At Egumendi, we manufacture them in multiple geometries, such as folded wear plates, curved wear plates and bevelled wear plates, as well as other designs in accordance with customer drawings.
Shot blasting machines
Linings and protection parts in shot blasting equipment are subjected to continuous and uniform impact: a scenario where the work hardening of X120Mn12 offers particularly effective performance.
Crushing, recycling and mining equipment
Jaws, wear plates, concaves and mill components subjected to combined impact and abrasion.
Bushes and wear elements
For applications with localised load and friction, we manufacture open bushes and closed bushes in X120Mn12, in compliance with DIN 1498 or in accordance with customer drawings.
Security and mechanical protection
Linings, armouring and protection elements where sustained impact resistance is required without the risk of brittle fracture.
Sheets and bars in stock
We maintain a permanent stock of X120Mn12 sheets and bars in thicknesses from 1.70 mm to 30 mm and diameters from Ø 5 mm to Ø 73 mm, as well as different formats depending on requirements.
The criterion that makes the difference
Unlike conventional quenched steels, whose wear resistance depends on a fixed hardness established at the source, X120Mn12 bases a large part of its effectiveness on its adaptability: hardness develops in service, exactly where it is needed and to the extent that the application demands.
This makes it a highly suitable technical solution for applications where impact is part of the working process.
At Egumendi, we have extensive experience in transforming X120Mn12 / 1.3401, manufacturing in accordance with customer drawings, ISO 9001 certification, and the capacity to respond quickly thanks to our permanent stock.
